Media accreditation in Uganda: what it is, what you need and how long it takes

What is media accreditation?
Anyone filming professionally in Uganda needs official recognition from the Uganda Media Council. That recognition is called media accreditation and it applies per crew member. Without valid accreditation, you are technically not permitted to film for commercial or journalistic purposes. It is not a formality you can skip.
Who needs it?
Every crew member actively filming: director, director of photography, sound engineer, producer. Accreditation is applied for per person, not per production. Bringing a crew of four means four separate applications.
What do you need per person?
Per crew member you will need:
Certificate of Good Conduct
Letter of introduction from the company or NGO
Passport copy
Two colour passport photos
Completed application form
A small but critical note on the Certificate of Good Conduct: you request this in your home country, which typically takes two to four weeks. Add the Uganda Media Council's own processing time, and you will understand why we always recommend starting at least six weeks before departure.
What goes in the letter of introduction?
The letter comes from the organisation you are filming for: your company, your NGO, or your client. It states who you are, what the purpose of the production is, and which crew members are taking part. We can help draft this letter if needed.
How does the application process work?
The application goes through a contact person at the Uganda Media Council, not through a public online portal. In practice this means you need someone who knows the right contacts and how to submit the paperwork correctly.
What does it cost?
The official Uganda Media Council fee is $175 per crew member.
What if you do not arrange it?
You risk your crew being stopped at the wrong moment. Fixing that on the ground takes time, energy and goodwill, exactly what you need during a production. This is not something you want to figure out on your first shoot day in Uganda.
